Spike in gang assaults on Rikers Island

A recent increase in gang violence has erupted over in Bronx’s 41st precinct. The Post reports that the 146 percent “surge in felony assaults last month” is due to a raging gang war at Rikers Island.

The 106 logged assaults, recorded in the 41st precinct’s records, is a dramatic increase from last year’s 43.

A Corrections spokesperson told the press that the violence is stemming from members of the Crip and Trinitario gangs being housed in the same unit.

The Gothamist also reported that the spike in assaults is due to a new system implemented by the Department of Corrections in which all assaults must be logged, as apposed to only those that led to an arrest.
