GMO apple will make U.S. industry sick

apples1An apple a day will keep the doctor away—that is until Canada’s genetically modified apple becomes available possibly early next year.

Okanagan Specialty Fruits Inc. is expecting  to receive government approval for production and sales of  Arctic-brand Golden Delicious and Granny Smith apples in Canada and the United States. The apples have been engineered so that browning will not occur when  they are sliced.

The U.S. apple industry are against the GMO Canadian apple not because they are against genetically modified produce, but rather because they believe that this could result in a decline in apple sales.  According to the U.S. Apple Association, value of the 2012 U.S. apple crop was $4 billion to $4.3 billion.

The deadline to sign a petition to tell the USDA to reject GMO apples is today.
