Homeless Children’s Struggles

Homeless Children’s Struggles

Reporters at the New York Times did a feature series on a young girl by the name of Dasani living as one of the 22,000 homeless children in New York City. Dasani, 11, lives with nine members of her family in a family shelter in the old Cumberland Hospital that was remodeled into a shelter.

The Times shows Dasani’s struggles as she copes with the notion of being homeless and different from other people. She resigns to the fact that she is in poverty and while other schoolchildren are showing off their new phones, she is accepting clothing donations from the school’s security guard.

Infestations of mice and mold are shown in her family’s bedroom and the mess it has become. Their family has hit rock bottom and it is a struggle for young children such as Dasani and her seven other siblings.
