Swanky Suite or Single Cell?

12991541811404672187prison051707-mdA recent study released by the city’s Independent Budget Office uncovered a staggering $460-dollar-a-night-cost per detainee at Rikers Island. A rate that  MSN.com reports, can get you a night, amenities included, at a “swanky Midtown hotel.”

Also comparing the $167,00 yearly cost to house someone at Rikers to a 4-year Ivy League tuition, according to the Associated Press, the article briefly delves into why these costs are so high.

Transportation spending, given that the 413 acre island complex sits secluded in the East River between Queens and mainland Bronx, is at an all time high.

Former corrections commissioner, Martin Horn, was reached for comment by the Associated Press and stated that costs would be lower, were the facility closer to courthouses or “more centrally located.”

The $30.3 million price tag on these annual transportation costs alone leaves one to wonder, what exactly are they driving out there?
