Hard [Candy] Truth: Diabetes on the Rise in NYC

New statistics released by the EPI Data Brief indicated that close to 650,000 New York adults have been diagnosed with diabetes in 2011, an astonishing 225 percent spike from ten years ago.

“As the obesity rate continues to rise in New York City, diabetes is becoming a health crisis,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley. “What’s most alarming is that more than 200,000 New Yorkers are walking around with this serious disease and don’t even know they’re at risk for blindness, amputation or even worse – premature death. We must work to end this crisis.”

Diabetes is a disease in which a person has high blood sugar. Obese New Yorkers are likely to be diagnosed with the disease.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg continues his health crusade, including the banning of oversized soft drinks, which was shut down by Judge Milton Tingling last month. Bloomberg is appealing.
