The Rockaways have had their fair share of celebrity visits post Sandy, but one such celebrity is there to stay. Patti Smith, also known as the “Godmother of Punk,” purchased her home in the Rockaways just three weeks before Sandy and has since been an active member of the community.

Smith recently teamed up with MoMA Director and Curator-at-Large Klaus Biesenbach for the opening of the VW Dome 2 on Beach 94. The dome was erected in an effort to start a conversation about sustainability, and the changes and challenges that lie ahead in the Rockaways. The space will serve as a place for communal gatherings, films, art, lectures, and performances.

On Mar. 29 Smith entertained guest, residents, and fans alike with a special performance to kick off the opening of the dome. “I love it here!” she exclaimed in a video. According to the Huff, Smith began with a new song, “Southern Cross” then eased into older songs along with some spoken word.

“We have the backyard as our sea,” said Smith, according to Artinfo.com. She’ll begina  new tour this summer for her new album “Banga.”

Here’s a short (and creative) video of Patti Smith visiting the dome.
