Scenes from the Staten Island Ferry 2013

The director of an annual production revolving around the Staten Island ferry recently spoke with NY Theatre, explaining his interest in producing a community-based theater piece.

Produced by the Sundog Theatre group, the play consists of six one-act shorts that are all written, directed, rehearsed, and performed within a 24 hour period. Each scenario is based on a real life submission, which creates an interesting method of allowing the community to participate in the production without being an actor or playwright. Scenes has been so popular with its community that it has been showcased each Spring for the past ten years.

The Sundog Theatre group is a non-profit theater company based in Staten Island. By their own account, their group is the only one on the island to provide original content. In addition, the group also provides a number of after school services for children, such as acting lessons.

Scenes from the Staten Island Ferry is scheduled to premiere on Saturday March 9 in Staten Island’s New Dorp Morvian Church and Saturday March 23 in Manhattan’s Vital Theatre. Tickets are already on sale at their website.
