Carnival on the Quad

Just one of the costumes at Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago

As I walked on the Brooklyn College campus on Tuesday afternoon I heard the sound of Calypso and Soca music, not to mention the sight of vibrant costumes and men on stilts. It was obvious… Brooklyn College was celebrating Carnival.

The chaotic fun ensued and common hours have never been so uncommon. The DJ set up in front of the library (of all places) and students enjoyed the event by dancing and celebrating their heritage.

Many countries have their own celebration of the Carnival festival but the West Indian/Caribbean celebration, which usually happens in Trinidad and Tobago,  is all about music, dancing, competition, costumes and having fun.

Brooklyn even has a West Indian American Day Association for Carnival events that go on in the borough.
