Two Lawmakers Rally Against Senior Teacher Layoffs

The New York Daily News ran a story about two city legislators that have set themselves apart from other government officials because of their profound interest in teachers’ rights. They have introduced bills that received a lot of attention in Albany. Manhattan Assemblyman Jonathan Bing who represents the upper East Side and Bronx Sen. Ruben Diaz, representative for the South Bronx, hope to have a system implemented where senority would not be the sole factor in layoffs. The alternative method outlined in the bills is for principals to make the decision about what teachers to fire after having the discussion with a panel of administrators, teachers and parents.

It will be interesting to see whether or not the bills will get passed. Bing and Diaz have a lot of supporters, particularly teachers, rallying behind them.
