“The Runaways” film not worth running to theaters for

Directed by Floria Sigismondi  “The Runaways” is a film  based on Cherie Currie’s book entitled Neon Angel: The Cherie Currie Story, and indeed it is.

“The Runaways” is suppose to be about the all American teenage rock group that formed in the 1970s, instead the film is about the lead singer of the band Cherie Currie and the tumultuous relationship she had with guitarist Joan Jett, touring and music.

Dakota Fanning, who portrays the vivacious Cherie Currie, does not do a believable job at it. Fanning’s depiction of Currie’s struggle, passion, and attitude is almost comical, in parts that should not have been.

Twilight star Kristen Stewart on the other hand fit the role of the rebellious Joan Jett perfectly, not to mention Stewart actually sang and played guitar in the film.

The most enjoyable part of the film besides Stewart’s performance, was Michael Shannon’s performance as he played the part of Kim Fowley, the eccentric, obnoxiously wild manager of The Runaways.

The major problem with the film is that it lacks to pay even a little attention to the rest of the members of the rest of the band. Even though there was a respectable portion dedicated to drummer Sandy West played by Stella Maeve, there is very little mention of epic guitarist Lita Ford. Also the film fails to mention the bands struggle to keep a steady bassist throughout their career.

Overall “The Runaways” should have been called “The Cherie Currie, Joan Jett Story”  Though the film is tolerable it is definitely not a memorable one.

  1. I know reviews are opinion pieces, but there’s a couple of issues in this review that bugs me. You mention the movie is supposed to be about the Runaways, but ends up being the Cherie Currie story – that’s because it’s based on her autobiography, so of course the movie is going to focus more on her. Also the original bassist in the Runaways did not want anything to do with the movie, nor did Lita Ford, which is why they don’t appear in the movie much.

  2. Hey Nicole,
Thanks for the comment I really appreciate it, this blog is a semester old and I cant believe people actually read it. 🙂

Yeah I personally had a problem with the title itself being called the Runaways, it might have well been called the Cherrie Currie story.

Yeah if Lita Ford and the original bassist didn’t want to have anything to do with the movie and since it doesnt focus on them either it’s not really involving The Runaways. But I guess with big studios behind the production they don’t really care.

    Thanks so much for commenting!
