Army Dogs Put Their Best Paw Forward

American soldiers aren’t the only ones risking their lives in the war.

A slew of highly trained German shepards are being deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, alongside U.S.  soldiers. According to the Washington Post, “the Defense Department has increased the number of military dogs from 1,320 to 2,025, and many have served multiple tours.”

Military members believe, that the dogs possess a keen sense of hearing and strong ability to sniff out bombs. Airforce manager Robert Tremell told the Washington Post that, “they’re finding weapons — AK-47s and caches and a lot of unexploded ordnance. . . . They’re invaluable.”

According to The Washington Post, 11 dogs have died in combat, since 2001.
