An assignment about immigration at Hunter College

The New York Times article here  talks about students who had to interview a close relative to find out their recent history in New-York for a sociology course at Hunter College.

The students actually talk about where their parents come from, but to me suprise, they also mention how they were surprised to discover the hardship their parents experienced coming to America.

How is it that students of age 19 and above never had the curiosity to question their parents’ experiences? I can understand the reticence of the parents to talk about painful experience, but I wonder…

Nancy Foner teaches the course “The People of New-York”  at Hunter College. Her area of  study is immigrataion and she has extensively written about immigration in New-York.
